COUGARS RALLY PAST SPARTANS

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars men’s volleyball team rallied to take the final three sets to defeat the No. 2 ranked Trinity Western Spartans 3-2 Saturday afternoon at MRU’s Kenyon Court in Calgary. The 21-25, 24-26, 25-22, 25-21, 15-10 loss drops the Spartans to 6-3, while the win moves the Cougars to 8-3.

Fifth year outside Nick Del Bianco (Surrey, B.C.) with 22 kills and nine digs and second year outside Blake Scheerhoorn (Belleville, Ont.) and third year outside Ryan Sclater (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) with 12 kills each led the Spartans attack, while Tyler Schmidt with 17 points and 11 digs, Jordan Parkin with 12 kills and 11 digs and Griogr Kartev with 11 kills led the Cougars.

Spartans setters Scott Plocktis (Kelowna, B.C.) , with 30 set assists, and Adam Schriemer (Winnipeg), with 17 set assists led the Spartans, while Samuel Brisbane with 48 set assists led the Cougars attack.

Jordan Parkin helped the Cougars race out to a hot start recording four kills on the team’s first five points, and both teams stayed within two points of each other through the first set. Once the Cougars tied the game at 18-18, the Spartans took over and closed out with a 25-21 win. Nicholas Del Bianco notched seven kills in the first frame.

The back-and-forth action continued in the second set as teams traded scores right up to the end. Blake Scheerhorn and Nicholas Del Bianco had four kills apiece, while Grigor Kartev led the Cougars with five. The Cougars were up 24-23 and had a chance to take the set, but a great Spartan attack prolonged the round. TWU finished it off with three straight points highlighted by a floating attack by Ryan Sclater over a block to clinch the set.

The Cougars wouldn’t go away after going down two sets to none, and they showed some great hunger in the third. They led 20-14 late, but a Spartan timeout seemed to spark the team and trimmed the Cougars’ lead to just 24-22. Tyler Schmidt, who record four kills in the third, was able to split a block and give the Cougars the third set victory.

Mount Royal was able to force a fifth set after claiming the fourth by a score of 25-21. It was fairly close until the end when the Cougars was able to clinch the victory with three straight points. Parkin had two key kills in the second half of the set to push the Cougars to victory.

The Cougars Tyler Schmidt was unstoppable in the fifth set. He recorded five kills. The Cougars were able to hold a lead through the entire fifth set, and Kartev capped off the match win with his 11th kill of the afternoon.The teams will meet up again tomorrow with the match set to start 20 min after the conclusion of the women’s volleyball game, which begins at 2 p.m.

Match Notes: The Spartans finished at 26.4 percent attack efficiency (58-19-148), while the Cougars finished at 23.3 percent (58-24-146)…the Cougars had nine service aces, while the Spartans had four… TWU had 10 team blocks to MRU’s seven…
