SPARTANS IN THREE OVER COUGARS

CALGARY – Led by fifth year middle Alicia Perrin (Creston, B.C.) with 12 kills and six blocks the No. 8 Trinity Western Spartans defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Kenyon Court in Calgary. The 25-19, 25-19, 25-12 victory improves the Spartans to 5-4 on the season, while the loss drops the Cougars to 2-9.

“For the past couple of weeks we have been focusing on our side of the court. Working on raising our percentages and our numbers and trying to do a better job of just managing the ball, controlling it and finding ways to get kills,” commented TWU head coach Ryan Hofer. “I’m really pleased with our performance tonight. It was great to see us work through that tonight and find a way to work on our side of the net. We served well and we did well blocking and attacking and putting pressure on them. It was great to have that focus and come out on top.”

“Alicia Perrin had an outstanding night for us tonight. She blocked well and hit some really nice numbers,” added Hofer. “We were balanced all around the court and our setters did a good job of moving the ball around.”

Spartan second year setter Nikki Cornwall (Coquitlam, B.C.), who finished 34 set assists, led the TWU attack that finished the afternoon hitting at 31.8 percent (41-13-88). In addition to Perrin the Spartans also had double digit kills form Sophie Carpentier (Ottawa) who finished with 11 kills. Mikayla Fritzke was the lone Cougar to reach double digits in kills finishing with 10 kills. Jenna Smith led the Mount Royal attack and finished with 28 set assists.

In addition to a strong offensive presence the Spartans were all strong at the net and in back row. TWU ended the night with 11 team blocks and 36 digs compared to MRU’s 29 digs and five team blocks.
The Spartans never allowed the Cougars to get into the match. TWU took a quick 16-8 lead in the first set on their way to a 25-19 win. In the second set Mount Royal played better, but the Spartans were still too much for the Cougars as TWU took a 2-0 lead with another 25-19 win.

In the third set TWU once again jumped out to a 16-8 lead and kept getting better as they finished off the set with a 9-2 run to take the set 25-12 and the match 3-0.Tomorrow will feature another matinee match between the Spartans and Cougars, this time at 2 p.m. MST on Kenyon Court.
