STORRS, Conn. — UConn guard Rodney Purvis has been suspended for the Huskies’ season opener on Friday against Bryant because of a violation of an NCAA rule governing participation in summer leagues.

The school says Purvis, a sophomore who sat out last season after transferring from North Carolina State, played in more than one league over the summer, which is not allowed.

In a statement, the university said it worked with the NCAA in determining that Purvis played a single game in a second summer league, which necessitated a one-game penalty.

Purvis, who was expected to start for the Huskies, will be available when the team travels next week to Puerto Rico to participate in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off tournament.
