Edmonton, AB – The Alberta Golden Bears proved why they are the No. 1 ranked team in the CIS, defeating UBC 5-0 Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton. Alberta outscored UBC 10-1 over the two game weekend series.
The Thunderbirds could not generate an offensive opportunities, as they were outshot 44-10 by the Golden Bears who improved to 13-1-0 while UBC drops to 6-6-2 at the midway point of the season.
UBC hung tough in the opening period, keeping it a scoreless game through 20 minutes despite being outshot 12-2. However, the Golden Bears would eventually find the back of the net. Levko Koper scored back to back goals in the second period 1:31 apart to make it 2-0 for Alberta after two periods.
The Golden Bears would add to their lead in the third period. TJ Foster and Jamie Crooks scored power play goals and Thomas Carr added one more even strength goal for good measure to make it a 5-0 final.
Alberta finished 3-for-8 on the power play, while UBC went 0-for-6.
Luke Siemens needed to make just 10 saves for the shutout. Eric Williams got the start for UBC, but left the game early in the first after getting a cut on his face. He was replaced by Matt Hewitt who stopped 34 of 39 shots he faced.
UBC will return home to host the Manitoba Bisons (6-8-0) next weekend at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
