Cougars have now won eight games in a row

(ISN) – COURTNEAY, B.C. – Grant Payne made 18 saves and Michael Fretz collected two points as the Victoria Cougars went on to defeat the Comox Valley Glacier Kings 2-1 on Saturday night.

Also scoring for Victoria (17-2-1-0) was Sam McMullen who extended his point streak to eight games. During that span, McMullen has compiled 23 points.

The Cougars have now won eight games in a row and are 4-0-0-0 in November.

Not everything was rosy for Victoria. Dylan Sampson broke up Payne’s shutout bid on a power play goal with 10:19 to play in regulation – cutting the Cougars lead in half.

Zachary Straza stopped 22 shots for Comox Valley (12-7-1-3) who had its three game win streak come to an end.

The Glacier Kings went 1-for-4 on the power play; meanwhile, Victoria failed to score on four chances with the man advantage.

In other action around the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League: Campbell River Storm 4, Kerry Park Islanders 0. Oceanside Generals 5, Saanich Braves 4.

Next game for Victoria is Wednesday, November 19 against the Westshore Wolves. Game time at The Q Centre, located at 1767 Old Island Highway, is 7:00 p.m.
