National team rower, Eric Woelfl (right), who will be returning home to the Niagara Region for a visit next Saturday.
On Saturday, November 22nd, Ridley College and the St. Catharines RC are laying out the welcome mat to local rowers in a packed filled day of rowing activities that includes a visit by national team member and local rower, Eric Woelfl, and Rowing Canada Aviron coach, Michelle Darvill.
Sponsored by health and wellness company Immunotec Inc., and in partnership with Rowing Canada Aviron, Ridley College and the St. Catharines Rowing Club are looking forward to hosting the special event. Athletes will get to rotate through sessions on sports nutrition, strength and conditioning, erging, and a session in the rowing tank, all while getting tips and hearing stories from Woelfl and Darvill.
Not to be left out, coaches will also have their own tailored sessions and will learn about technique, technology, and training programs for the indoor season.
“We have been working on a few projects for the special day,” said Siobhan McLaughlin, head rowing coach for girls and physical education teacher at Ridley. “We wanted to provide top junior rowers and their coaches from the Niagara region an opportunity to come together and learn from experts about indoor training.”
One of the highlights of the day will be the presence of Eric Woelfl and Michelle Darvill.
“We are excited to have Michelle spend the day with us as well as local boy, Eric,” explained Siobhan. “They are both great mentors to the next generation of coaches and athletes.”
For his part, Woelfl is also excited to give back to the rowing community that nurtured him.
“Giving back to this community is very important to me,” explained Woelfl. “It was the individuals and clubs in this area which taught me the principles of rowing; discipline, teamwork, success, responsibility and fun.”
Woelfl is looking forward to the packed filled day and praises a region that continues to build upon its rowing heritage.
“There is no place like St.Catharines when it comes to rowing,” explained Woelfl. “With so many regattas here, including next summers Pan American Games regatta, the city is a mecca when it comes to rowing.”
Woelfl was a member of the lightweight four which competed this past summer at the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He recently became national champion in the lightweight men’s pair at the RBC National Rowing Championships two weekends ago in Victoria, BC.

Saturday’s activities commence at 9am at the Ridley College Fieldhouse and continue until 4:15pm.
