UBC prepares for a weekend series against Winnipeg


Vancouver, BC – Fresh off a weekend split against Alberta, the No. 2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds (3-1) women’s basketball team makes the trip to friendly Manitoba to take on the University of Winnipeg (4-2) for a weekend series.

In their lone meeting of the season last year, UBC defeated the Wesmen 81-75.

After starting the season with four straight wins, Winnipeg lost both games last weekend to Saskatchewan. This year they are led by guard Megan Noonan who is fifth in the conference in scoring, averaging 17.5 points per game. Fellow guard Stephanie Kleysen is averaging 15.8 points per games and 6.7 rebounds a game.

Winnipeg finished one game out of the playoffs last year with a record of 12-10.

For UBC this season, Kris Young has been clutch. At times this year she has put the team on her back in the fourth quarter, leading them to victory. This year the two-time CIS All-Canadian is averaging a double double. She leads the Canada West in scoring, averaging 19.5 points per game and is fifth in rebounds, grabbing 10 per game. 

Fellow fifth-year player Harleen Sidhu has also had a strong start to the season averaging 15.2 points per game and 7.8 rebounds a game.

Friday’s game is set for 4:00 pm PST and tip off on Saturday is 3:00 pm PST. Both games will be webcast live at canadawest.tv.
