(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s swim teams fell short of earning any medals on the first day of the 2014 Canada West Championships, Nov. 21-23 at the University of Lethbridge. However, several Vikes stepped up to top-ten finishes in their evening performances on day 2 of the conference championships.

Rookie Taylor Snowden-Richardson swam to two best times for the women’s, coming in ninth overall in the 200-m backstroke (2:21.66) and tenth in the 200-m freestyle (2:07.09). As the anchor in the 4×100 relay, she would also clock in the best time split (3:57.04) and place the Vikes women at fourth for this event.

Fellow Vikes rookie Lauren McMillan finished third in the B-Finals for the women’s 100-m butterfly (1:05.40), right after completing a longer and more challenging 400-m IM. Rachael Newman touched in for ninth, two places ahead of 18-year-old McMillan in the 100-m fly with a time of 1:03.08. The third-year Victoria native also raced a best time of 26.98 in the women’s 50-m freestyle B-Final, placing her eleventh overall for that event.

For the men, rookie Robert Hill met his new CIS qualifying time in the 200-m backstroke touching in at tenth (2:03.65).Brett Zollen and Jon McKay came in tenth (1:52.20) and eleventh (1:53.42) respectively in the 200-m freestyle. Craig Dagnall, Ryan Howe, Brett Zollen and Buzz Mallender collectively finished fifth in the men’s 4×100 relay with a time of 3:33.01.

On the first day of the championship, second year McKay finished fourth overall in the men’s 1500-m freestyle while third year Zollen was ninth in the men’s 50-m butterfly. Jordan Stariha and Sarah Galbraith touched in for ninth and eleventh respectively for the women’s 50-m breaststroke. Both Vikes men’s and women’s teams came in fourth for the 4×100 relay.

The Vikes will return to the pool tomorrow for the last day of the Canada West championship. Heats begin at 8 a.m. and finals will start at 2 p.m. PST, with broadcast available for viewing at canadawest.tv.
