Vancouver Giants’ valiant comeback attempt falls short

(ISN) – Matt Bellerive had two goals, but the Vancouver Giants’ valiant comeback attempt fell short as they lost 4-3 to the Prince George Cougars on Saturday night at the Pacific Coliseum. Carter Popoff also scored as the G-Men dropped their third game in a row.

The Giants put themselves in a hole early in the game as Kody McDonald opened the scoring for the Cougars after the midway mark of the first period, and Brad Morrison found the net with under two minutes to go in the first to put PG ahead 2-0 after one.

Bellerive netted his first of the night on a great individual effort in the second period when he scored on a wraparound at the right post on a power play to put the G-Men on the board. Zach Pochiro restored Prince George’s two-goal lead in the later stages on the middle frame, wiring a wrist shot past Vancouver goalie Cody Porter from the left circle.

The G-Men battled back in the third period to tie the game. First, Popoff deposited a puck into the top right corner of the net from the right circle after a pretty pass from Jakob Stukel before Bellerive tallied his second of the night to even the score with 4:26 left in the stanza as he redirected Mason Geertsen’s point shot past Cougars goalie Tavin Grant. But the Prince George club would find the winner with 1:12 remaining as Pochiro pounced on a loose puck in the slot and bagged his second of the night with a hard shot from between the face-off dots.

The Giants will now head out on a four game Alberta road trip that begins on Tuesday night in Medicine Hat against the Tigers. Catch the action on TSN 1410 radio beginning with the pre-game show at 5:00pm. The puck drops at 6:00pm.

Vancouver’s next home game is on Friday, December 5th when the Portland Winterhawks visit the Pacific Coliseum.
