CIS Men’s Hockey Top 10 (#5): Top-ranked Alberta sweeps first-place votes

45

OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion Alberta Golden Bears top the CIS men’s hockey rankings for the fifth time in as many national polls this season.

For the first time this fall, the Golden Bears (7-1) received all 16 first-place votes from the media panel, thanks to the UNB Varsity Reds and UQTR Patriotes both suffering their first league losses of the campaign.

UNB and UQTR had picked up three and one first-place nods, respectively, last Tuesday.

Rounding out the new Top 10 behind Alberta are the No. 2 Acadia Axemen (5-1 / up one position), No. 3 UNB (4-1-1 / down one), No. 4 Windsor Lancers (7-0 / up three), No. 5 UQTR (5-1 / down one), No. 6 Calgary Dinos (6-2 / down one), No. 7 Mount Royal Cougars (6-2 / down one), No. 8 Moncton Aigles Bleus (5-1 / no change), No. 9 Saint Mary’s Huskies (4-1-1 / up one) and No. 10 Manitoba Bisons (5-3 / down one).

While the Golden Bears were enjoying a break in their Canada West schedule, UNB had a tough week in the Atlantic conference dropping two of three contests, including a 4-3 overtime loss at Acadia in the “CIS game of the week”, last Friday.

For their part, the Patriotes were upset 5-4 by York on Saturday, one night after escaping with a double OT win over Brock

The biggest winner in the new poll, Windsor improved to an impressive 7-0 on the season thanks to a two-game sweep against Lakehead in Thunder Bay, 5-4 in regulation and 7-6 in extra time, both times after staging third-period comebacks.

The Canada West schedule resumes this week, including a Top-10 doubleheader between No. 1 Alberta and No. 7 Mount Royal, Friday in Edmonton and Saturday in Calgary. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Mountain on both nights, live on CanadaWest.TV.
