Canada will play Cuba on the weekend of May 15 to 17, as recently confirmed by the FIVB (international volleyball federation) in what is expected to be the biggest edition of the World League tournament so far with a record 32 teams participating in the competition for the first time.
“We were all very excited to hear the news that World League will begin in Calgary during the age-class nationals,” said Volleyball Canada’s men’s team coach, Glenn Hoag. “It is very important for the development and growth of our sport to be able to showcase athletes at all levels.”
In 2014, the Canadian portion of World League also began at Calgary’s Stampede Corral with two wins over Finland. The locations of Canada’s other World League matches are yet to be finalized. The Canadian women’s team will also play international matches, tentatively scheduled for May 13 and 14, in conjunction with Calgary 2015 – more details to follow.
The Calgary Sport Tourism Authority has been a key supporter of Calgary 2015, which will combine all of Volleyball Canada’s current national championship categories into one event, creating the largest celebration of volleyball in Canada. Calgary 2015 runs from May 14 to 19.
“We are tremendously excited to welcome the FIVB World League and the 2015 Volleyball Canada Championships to Calgary this spring,” says Doug Mitchell, Chair, Calgary Sport Tourism Authority. “This is the perfect opportunity for volleyball enthusiasts of all ages and abilities to experience the best the sport has to offer, from grassroots competitors to professionals. Hosting the combination of 10,000 nationals’ participants with our National Team players competing in World League is a testament to the Calgary Sport Tourism Authority’s strategic approach to event bidding and our history of hosting world-class events. We know the benefits of these events will be far-reaching for Calgary and will include economic and tourism opportunities, in addition to encouraging local youth to live active lifestyles.”
More information on the men’s and women’s national team matches will be released at www.volleyball.ca when it’s available. See the schedule overview for 2015 FIVB World League Groups 2 and 3.
