(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – Six students and one alumna from the University of Victoria were recently selected to represent Canada at the 2015 World Under 23 Ultimate Championships in London, UK, from Jul. 12-18.
Oliver Telfer, Ben Burelle, Nick Wright, Corinne Dunwoody, Naomi Redmond, Lillian Pham, and alumna Nicola Parker are among the 79 players named to the national team list, all of whom compete for the UVic men’s and women’s club teams known as UVictim and UVixens.
Held every two years, the 2015 Under 23 World Ultimate Championships are the last chance for all but Burelle to play competitively at the junior international level. The last event was held in Toronto, Ont., and featured 36 teams from 17 nations. This year, Canada will send a mixed team, an open team and a women’s team.
Dunwoody and Redmond were competitors in high school, both joined the UVixens in 2011, and are now two of the four captains of the team. “I’m really excited to meet people from around the world,” said Dunwoody. “There’s a good chemistry among us [UVic players] so I think we’re going in as a strong unit.”
Telfer, who is one of the current captains on the Vikes men’s team, UVictim, started playing competitively in 2010, also his first year at UVic.
Alongside Telfer, teammate Wright will be a key factor for Canada at the 2015 world championship. Wright brings previous international experience to the mix after participating in the 2012 World Under 19 junior championship and the 2013 World Under 23 Championship.
“We’ve worked really hard to compete at the world level,” said Telfer. “It makes you feel validated to represent the country.”
The UVixens are an elite college women’s team that won the Canadian University series in fall 2012, and attended the USAU College Nationals in Ohio last spring. UVictim is the men’s elite club team at UVic and boast talent from several local clubs including Furious George, Blackfish and the Skysharks.
