OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion Alberta Golden Bears top the CIS men’s hockey rankings for the tenth time in as many national polls this season.
This week’s Top 10 is the last one of the fall semester. The next rankings will be released on Jan. 6.
The Bears (15-3) received 13 first-place votes from the 16-member media panel this week, four more than last Tuesday. The other three nods went to the UNB Varsity Reds (12-2-2), who move up one position to No. 2 in the latest poll.
Rounding out the new Top 10 are the No. 3 Saint Mary’s Huskies (12-3-1 / down one), No. 4 Calgary Dinos (13-5 / no change), No. 5 Acadia Axemen (12-3-1 / no change), No. 6 Windsor Lancers (14-1-1 / no change), No. 7 McGill Redmen (13-3 / up two), No. 8 UQTR Patriotes (11-2-2 / down one), No. 9 Carleton Ravens (12-4 / down one), as well as the No. 10 Mount Royal Cougars (12-6), who return to the CIS elite after a one-week absence.
Alberta, UNB, McGill and Mount Royal were the only Top-10 teams to go 2-0 over the past week.
The top-ranked Golden Bears rebounded from two losses against Calgary on Nov. 20-21 with a two-game sweep of Manitoba in Edmonton, 5-3 and 3-2.
The V-Reds beat cross-town rival St. Thomas 6-4 and dominated Moncton 9-2; the Redmen defeated Concordia 5-3 and Carleton 6-2; the Cougars edged Saskatchewan 4-3 in a shootout and 2-1.
Top-10 matchups resulted in a 2-1 Saint Mary’s win over Acadia, a 4-3 shootout win by Carleton over UQTR, and McGill’s 6-2 victory over Carleton.
Only three league games are left before the December break, all in the OUA, including Western at Laurier on Tuesday night, Laurier at Brock on Wednesday, and Western at Windsor, also on Wednesday.
