An autumn of successful visits to local rowing clubs by high performance athletes and coaches has ended.
Made possible through a partnership with Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) and Immunotec Inc., the RCA Club and Coach Grant, Powered by Immunocal, reunited high performance with grassroots rowing.
“This program was a great way for our best coaches and athletes to give back to our local clubs,” said Donna Atkinson, CEO of Rowing Canada Aviron. “It’s important to ensure national team athletes stay connected with their home clubs and inspire the next generation while fostering excellence at the grassroots level.”
Along with the athlete and coach visit, the clubs were given a $1,000 grant to be used as they saw fit to help maximize the opportunity of the visit.
Any club in the country could apply for the grant. The four clubs that were chosen included:
Argonaut Rowing Club, Toronto, ON
Fredericton Rowing Club, Frederiction, NB
South Niagara Rowing Club, Welland, ON
Ridley College Boat Club & St. Catharines Rowing Club, St. Catharines, ON
Eric Woelfl, national team lightweight member who attended the most recent visit in St. Catharines, enjoyed reconnecting with the young rowers.
“I really enjoyed working with the junior coaches and athletes throughout the day,” said Woelfl. “Being a high performance athlete, I found it very interesting to have a chance to go back to my roots and view the sport from a different perspective.”
In addition to supplying sport performance nutrition supplements to RCA’s national team athletes as an official supplier, Immunotec Inc wished to recognize the role of local clubs and so worked with RCA in the design of the Club and Coach Grant, Powered by Immunocal.
The visits, which allowed national team athletes the chance to interact with young rowers in their hometowns, were also well received from the clubs themselves.
“It was good for our current and prospective athletes to hear the inspirational stories of triumph from the national team athletes,” said Raissa Espiritu, President of the Argonaut Rowing Club in Toronto. “It helps demonstrate the work ethic needed to be successful and the mental strength that is required. That is a great thing.”
The events also helped the clubs with their membership drives.
“The grant also helped to spearhead this flurry of activity which brought more members into our club,” added Espiritu. “We are always looking for new members.”
