Erich Eichhorn (ISN) – Many thought it was a foregone conclusion. The Mount Douglas High School Varsity AAA football team would add another chapter on their storied way to declaring themselves a football dynasty, and defeating the South Delta Sun Devils in the BC High School Championships. Unfortunately, the old cliché “ don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched” rang clear and true as the South Delta Sun Devils shocked the Rams with a 53-30 win.

The Rams had their way with the Sun Devils in their only meeting of the regular season, beating South Delta 44-7 on their home turf only a month earlier in the season. The Sun Devils paid that loss back in spades (and touchdowns), handing the Rams their first, and most important loss of the season.

Sun Devils Lucas Kirk was outstanding in the face of adversity. Engineering drive after drive, carrying his team down field, Kirk was instrumental in giving his team the title, and helping contribute to the record books with the highest scoring BC High School football senior varsity championship game ever seen. Kirk would finish the game going 23-37 for 342 yards and 6 touchdowns.
“The last time we played the we just didn’t execute the way that we wanted to,” Kirk said. “I couldn’t have done this without my teammates and tonight we really went out and just executed.”

South Delta put up a 20-10 lead at the end of the first quarter to set the pace. Kirk would throw TD strikes to Thomas Franklin and Grant McDonald. Bryce Connors would add his own TD with an 81-yard kickoff return to stun the Rams. Connors would also catch for 94 yards and two touchdowns on the night, to play a major role in the game. The Rams would get points from Michael Olson’s 29 yard field goal, and Seye Farinu’s 10 yard TD run.

Grant McDonald would add to his team’s lead in the second quarter on a 2-yard running into the end zone. The Sun Devils would get the ball back late in the second quarter after a Rams fumbled snap on their own 32 yard line. Kirk, not to let the opportunity go to waste, would find Jack McDonald on a short slant route, running it 35 yards for the TD with 43 sec left in the half. The Sun Devils would go into the locker room up 33-10 at halftime.

Rams QB Joe Clark, ever fighting an uphill battle for positive field position, would find Gavin Cob in the back of the Sun Devils end zone with 2:40 remaining in the third frame for Clark’s second of three touchdowns on the night. Clark would finish the night with 211 yards passing for three touchdowns. South Delta would add a field goal with just inside two minutes remaining to hold on to a delicate 36-17 lead going into the final quarter.

With that Rams score, it was apparent South Delta was aware of the comeback potential in the Rams offense. South Delta would add points to pad the tenuous lead when Sun Devils Gordon Cooper would pull down a 47 yard Lucas Kirk pass and cruise into the end zone for the TD, to create what was all but now an insurmountable South Delta 43-17 lead.
The Rams, showing the heart of a championship team, would fight on. With only 11:06 remaining, Gavin Cobb would take the pass from QB Clark deep in the Rams end and run the length of the field, only to be tripped up at the five-yard line in what would have been a sure Rams TD. Cobb would get his redemption three plays later on a bullet pass just inside the end zone. 43-24.

The Sun Devils Kirk would put the nail in in the Rams coffin with one last major on a 42 yard corner route pass to an open Bryce Connors, taking to pass over the left shoulder, sprinting the sideline 5 yards for the final South Delta TD at 7:09 of the fourth. The Rams would add a late touchdown.

For the Sun Devils, this is their first BC AAA High School Championship. With the talent displayed on the field, a new rivalry is sure to be born. Congratulations to both teams on your accomplishments.
