The Jets lost Evander Kane for two games for hitting Stoner in the numbers against the boards on Sunday afternoon. Dumb play, first time he’s done it and the first tim he’s ever received supplemental discipline. If this were Kane getting hit by Stoner no one would really worry about two games. If this was another Jets player hitting Stoner no one would really worry about two games but because it’s EVANDER FREAKING KANE it needs hours of analysis and speculation- yawn.
Nothing to see here, go about your business.
Fact is the Jets have two games they should be expected to win, even without Evander Kane who was hardly an impact player against either team during the last two games. So without Kane what happens?
Ladd Little Wheeler
Perreault Scheifele Frolik
Thorburn Lowry Halischuk
Galiardi Slater Peluso
That’s what you are going after the Stars with tonight if you are head coach Paul Maurice.
The interesting aspect of this is probably the opposition. While the Stars have some heavy weight talent is the depth really there in the forwards let alone the defense and goaltending. That’s probably the area the Jets are superior, between the pipes and Maurice is trying to match out the strength of his lineup to that of the Stars.
Wait until an icing by the Jets and pray that it’s not one of the bottom lines pinned down and tired.
What should be interesting is the PK unit for the Jets. Kane has been a stalwart on it, playing well and helping keep it a solid and effective unit. His speed and tenaciousness will be missed there.
The other story is that Paul Maurice is going back to Michael Hutchinson tonight after using Pavelec on Sunday. While the Jets did come back and steal a point versus Anaheim Pavelec dropped a .840 save percentage on a low volume of shots. Is it meaningful? Maybe but clearly the coach currently is not comfortable with either goalie as a clear number one, at least yet.
The other variable is that Patrice Cormier is en route to Dallas today as a call up from the IceCaps. Whether he plays tonight is unknown but he can help and has proven that in the past. Many fans might prefer seeing Cormier centre the third line with Lowry on wing and Halischuk on the other side with Thorburn back to the fourth with Slater and Peluso/Galiardi.
These are the times when your depth is tested and it will be awhile longer for the Jets with the three key injuries on defense. How the Jets weather this storm will be telling as has been stated in this space before. Fortuantely Kane returns soon but that does not mean the Jets are out of danger. A win tonight is not a must, but is sure is a ‘nice to have’. The biggest change though is that it’s nice to have a back-up who plays like a number one goalie and that’s probably why the Jets aren’t fretting yet.
