(ISN) – PENTICTON, BC –The Penticton Vees Jr. ‘A’ Hockey Club have signed defenseman Shayne Gwinner (94), the team announced Thursday.
To make room for the signing, the Vees have placed forward Matt Serratore (94) on the 30-day Injured Reserve retroactive to December 5th, as he recovers from a broken leg.
The Gwinner signing helps fill a void on the Vees blue-line, as they’re missing two defensemen, in Gabe Bast and Dante Fabbro, who are absent for the World Junior ‘A’ Challenge in Saskatchewan.
The Drumheller, Alberta product brings plenty of experience with him to Penticton, as Gwinner has 119 games played on his resume between the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). The 20-year-old rear-guard played with his hometown Drumheller Dragons last year, picking up 23 points in 31 regular season games. He also played in all 16 of Drumheller’s playoff games last spring, pick up a pair of goals and nine points, as the Dragons advanced to the AJHL Final before losing out to the Spruce Grove Saints.
Gwinner not only brings experience and skill to the Vees defensive corps but some grit as well, as he collected 149 penalty-minutes in just 31 games in the AJHL last season. Prior to playing with his the Dragons, Gwinner split his time in the WHL between the Moose Jaw Warriors, Prince Albert Raiders and Saskatoon Blades.
Gwinner checks in at 6’1 and is 180 pounds and is a left-handed shooting defenseman. He will wear number 24 when he makes his Vees debut tomorrow night, Friday, December 12th, when the Vees make the trip up to the North Shuswap to face the Salmon Arm Silverbacks.
