Cross-country’s Cassidy to represent Canada at World Championship

(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – Following a successful 2014 CIS cross-country season, fourth-year University of Victoria Vike Ryan Cassidy will now turn his eyes towards the international stage. Athletics Canada announced today, Dec. 12, the 23 athletes set to represent Canada at the 41st IAAF World Cross Country Championships and Panamerican Cross Country cup.

At the most recent CIS cross-country championship hosted in windy St. John’s, Newfoundland, Cassidy was the top Canada West male athlete and was named a CIS First Team All-Canadian and Canada West Male Athlete of the Year. Cassidy paced the Vikes to a CIS silver medal and the New Brunswick native was seventh overall in 34:10.0. The Vikes were also named the Canada West men’s cross-country champions for the fifth-straight year, while coach Brent Fougner earned his sixth conference Coach of the Year title.

The 41st edition of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships takes place in Guiyang, China on March 28, 2015.

Prior to the World Championships the athletes will compete at the Panamerican Cross Country Cup in Barranquilla, Colombia, February 21-22. NACAC area champions will be determined through separate scoring of NACAC nations within the Panamerican Cup. In 2014 the Canadian junior women swept the individual podium and won team gold in the NACAC region while the other three teams won silver.
