(ISN) – Canadians Dan Dearing and Garrett May, both of Toronto, finished fifth at the FIVB Mangaung Open in South Africa. 2012 Olympian Josh Binstock (Richmond Hill, Ont) and Maverick Hatch (Comox, BC) finished ninth.

Dearing and May, seeded 24th, reached the third round, and then were defeated by Krou and Rowlandson of France 2-0 (21-19, 21-15), who were seeded third at the event.

Binstock and Hatch were beaten by Fuchs and Kaczmarek of Germany 2-0 (21-16, 23-21) in Round 2.

Binstock’s partner for this season, Sam Schachter, stayed in Canada because of a shoulder injury. Binstock and Schachter reached the podium twice this fall at FIVB events. Hatch and Binstock had not played together internationally before this event.

Canada did not have any female teams in South Africa.

The tournament was the last of seven double-gender Open events on the 2014 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour schedule.
