(ISN) – MISSISSAUGA, ON,  – Winter sports season is in full swing and Boston Pizza is helping Canadian athletes fuel up with the launch of Athlete’s Choice, a feature menu developed in partnership with Hockey Canada and a performance dietitian. The menu, designed to provide the right amount of energy, sodium and fat to fuel athletes before or after the game, features a range of dishes to suit everyone’s tastes, including salads, pasta, pizza and steak.

“Boston Pizza has always been a destination for sports fans, but it’s also a place where athletes and sports teams love to dine,” says Joanne Forrester, vice president of marketing, Boston Pizza International Inc. “As we head into the busy winter sports season, we’re excited to give athletes and parents everything they need to fuel up so they can play their best.”
Kelly Anne Erdman, a cycling Olympian and performance dietitian at the Canadian Sport Institute Calgary, worked closely with Boston Pizza and Hockey Canada to develop the menu and ensure it meets the unique dietary needs of athletes. Because athletes burning an abundance of energy have different nutritional needs compared to those who are less active, they require more energy (calories), protein, carbohydrates, fats, fluids and minerals, such as sodium (which is lost in sweat).

“I have a lot of experience working with elite Canadian athletes, including the National Women’s Hockey Team, and I’m excited to use my knowledge to help everyday Canadian athletes make the right pre- and post-game dining choices to support their best performances,” says Erdman. “For athletes participating in periods of high-intensity or long duration training, like day-long hockey tournaments or a full day on the slopes, it’s critical that they consume adequate energy to maintain body weight and health to truly maximize their training and competitions.”
The Athlete’s Choice menu is available at all Boston Pizza locations and includes dishes such as: Grilled Chicken Garden Greens, Sriracha Chicken pizza, a pizza topped with sriracha sauce, mozzarella, sriracha chicken and sesame seeds, green onions, cilantro and a sriracha mayo drizzle; Whole Wheat Pollo Marinara Linguini with signature marinara sauce with diced chicken breast, red onions and wok-steamed red and green pepper on whole wheat noodles; NY Striploin Steak, a 10-ounce New York striploin steak, served with garlic toast, seasonal vegetables and choice of side; and, Chicken Calzone, multigrain pizza dough folded Italian-style, stuffed with diced chicken breast, green pepper, chopped tomato, pizza mozzarella, chopped cilantro and bruschetta mix.
