(ISN) – COSTA MESA, California – The Vanguard University Lions scored early and often as they defeated the Trinity Western University Spartans 111-71 in Monday night’s non-conference match in Costa Mesa, Calf.

The Lions, who led 58-30 at the half, had the better of the Spartans in most statistical areas, most notably outrebounding TWU 44-31 and outshooting the Spartans 55.2 percent (37-67) to 43.1 percent (25-58).

Keith Mason (SR/Carson, CA) starred for the Lions scoring a team high 18 points in the win, while TWU’s Justin Bakuteka (5th yr, Toronto) scored 21 points in the loss, the high for both squads, going 7-16 and shooting 50% from downtown.

Vanguard jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead with two layups by Mason and an offensive put back by Zach Allmon (SO/San Luis Obispo, CA). Chris Gorman (SR/Oceanside, CA) knocked home a 10-foot fade away jumper to push the advantage to eight points.

The Spartans reached the scoreboard with 16:15 remaining in the half when Jesse Jeffers (4th yr, North Vancouver, B.C.) scored two of his 11 points.

The Lions built a 12-4 lead behind another bucket from Mason in the paint, off a beautiful find from DeAngelo Jones (SR/Cheney, WA). Gorman found Jordan Diandy (SR/Dakar, Senegal) under the basket for an easy lay-in with just under five minutes elapsed in the game.

The Blue and Gold exerted defensive pressure, culminating in an eight point run capped by a 15-foot bank shot and a breakaway layup, off a strip steal of the Spartan ball handler, both by Selle Hann (SR/Dakar, Senegal).

Justin Bakuterka stopped the VU run knocking down a left wing three-pointer, cutting the margin to 20-7.

Holding a 17 point advantage, Jones grabbed an offensive rebound and scored an acrobatic reverse layup. On the next possession, he found Allmon for his second dunk of the night, this time on a fast-break.

Jeffers, 4-7 shooting for the game, recorded an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the Lions edge to 36-18 with 6:45 left in the first frame.

The Lions rolled into the half with a 28 point margin scoring a season high 58 points in the first half.

John Staats (SR/Cypress, CA) led all scorers in the period with 10 points. The trio of Allmon, Gorman, and Mason each netted eight points prior to halftime.

Bakuteka and Jeffers paced the Spartans with seven points each. Tyus Allen (2nd year, White Rock, B.C.) tied (with three Lions) for a game high four assists in the half.

VU picked up right where it left off before half, as Jones drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key, pushing the lead to 61-30.

Gorman splashed home a triple, shooting 6-11 for his 15 total points, as the Lions built a 40 point lead.

As the game ticked below 14 minutes remaining, Ware-Berry hit his second three-pointer of the game on 3-6 shooting behind the three-point line, en route to his season high 14 points.

Vanguard maintained a 35 point advantage as both squads exchanged baskets until 10:06 when Mason dunked home the ball from the baseline.

The Lions went over the century mark with 5:58 minutes left in the game, as Ware-Berry made a pair from the charity stripe, building Vanguard’s game-high 44 point lead.

The Spartans will continue their California tour tomorrow against Cal State San Marcos. Game time in San Marcos is set for 7:30 p.m. PST.
