Women’s Prospect teams continue to improve as 2014 comes to a close

VICTORIA – The Highlanders’ LIWSL squadsclosed out 2014 with two matches over the past week, continuing to show improvement in their play as they faced off against Prospect Lake and Victoria Athletics.

LIWSL Prospect Women

The LIWSL squad faced Prospect Lake last Tuesday, Dec. 8, dropping a tight 1-0 decision at Finlayson Turf. The tight game illustrated the progression of the women’s prospect squad, who had conceded a 6-0 drubbing in their previous fixture against Prospect Lake on Oct. 17.

An early penalty kick at the ten-minute mark was awarded to Prospect Lake, who needed just the one goal to carry them to victory.

Highlander Holly Goodacre’s strike off the post and teammate Olivia Trotter’s miss on an empty net were just a few of the chances that Victoria generated in their attempt to level the score. Despite a flurry of chances and strong play the women’s squad would be unable to convert a goal.

Later in the week, the women faced Victoria Athletics, Friday, Dec. 13, playing to a 1-1 draw. Annika Schelrud was the lone Highlander to score in the match, firing a shot over the ‘keeper and under the cross bar from 20 yards out in the 67th minute.

Emily Moore and Miranda Clarke split duties between the wordwork, with Moore getting tested early as Athletics showed jump as play got underway.

The Highlanders’ utilized Finlayson’s turf throughout the match, using smart ball tactics to slow Athletics attack, but fell short of a go-ahead-goal after 90 minutes of play.

The LIWSL team will next see action in the new year, Jan. 17 against Castaways FC at the University of Victoria’s Field 3 at 4:00 p.m. The MWSL team play Coastal FC on the weekend of Jan 10-11. With a specific date TBD.
