Volleyball Canada today confirmed all three of Canada’s FIVB World League host cities and venues.

“We are very excited to have three supportive cities and venues, and are pleased to announce that we are heading east in June 2015 following the opening weekend in Calgary in May,” said Volleyball Canada director of international events, Alan Ahac.

“After a hiatus of more than 20 years, this allows volleyball fans in the maritime provinces, the opportunity to experience world-class volleyball.”

The Canadian World League dates and locations are:

– May 17 and 18, vs Cuba in Calgary (Stampede Corral)
– June 5 and 6, vs Argentina in Halifax (Scotiabank Centre)
– June 12 and 13 (tentative), vs Bulgaria in Summerside, PEI *

“All three cities have shown excellent enthusiasm for World League, and we are looking forward to showcasing our men’s team in 2015, leading up to the Pan Am Games in Toronto,” said Ahac.

The Canadian men’s team is part of Group 2, which also includes Argentina, Germany, Bulgaria, Cuba, France, Korea, Finland, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Portugal. Cuba joins Group 2 after being promoted from Group 3 in 2014, while Bulgaria is in the group after being relegated from Group 1.

The 2015 FIVB Volleyball World League will feature a record 32 participating countries. Since 2012, the premier annual men’s volleyball competition has seen tremendous growth having expanded from 12 teams two years ago, to 18 in 2013 and 28 in 2014.

The second group will feature 12 teams split into three pools C (Canada’s pool), D and E, with the teams involved playing home and away for a total of 12 matches per team and 72 matches in total. Four teams – the host country and the winners of the three pools – will qualify for the Group 2 Finals with a possibility of qualification for the Group 1 Final 6.

In 2014 Canada finished 2nd in its pool and did not advance to the finals. However, the Canadians, currently ranked 14th in the world, had a best-ever seventh place finish at the 2014 World Championships in Poland.

All World League matches (home and away) will be broadcast on the Sportsnet network (details to be released in 2015).

Volleyball Canada had previously announced the opening weekend, as it will be held as part of the Calgary 2015, the largest national championship this country has experienced.
