Happy Boxing Day! This time of year is simply wonderful and I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas, Festivus, Hanukah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice or whatever holiday you celebrate. It was nice to unplug for a few days and spend some quality time with family and friends.
The third day of Christmas finds more family coming to town as my brothers and their wives along with my goddaughter and her s.o.
hit town tonight and will be in the house for the Flyers game tomorrow night. Then we will celebrate more with an ole fashioned McCann holiday meal as I attempt to recreate my Grandmothers New Year’s Ham Dinner with all the fixings. It is the most family we have had together in one city since I was in high school.
The Philadelphia game is always one that draws mixed feelings for me. The team I grew up rooting for, celebrating the Cup on Broad Street, spending many a night at the Spectrum cheering on the orange. The team of my childhood… but starting out with a team, being a season ticket holder since day one. Watching the evolution of an expansion franchise has been fun, and trying, and frustrating… but ultimately, very satisfying.
I have to admit… I hated how the Philadelphia organization acted when they dropped the offer sheet a few years back. I know that it was within the bounds of the rules, but it still was not good. It smacked of desperation.
But that is ancient history, the Flyers are in the midst of a re-tooling, again. The problem is, the organization doesn’t seem to learn from past mistakes. Goaltending and defense are still an issue and don’t show any signs of improvement. It is time to blow it up completely and start over with this team. Perhaps Philly GM Ron Hextall can do it, but this is a franchise that is caught by its past success and can’t seem to figure out how to leverage it to get better for the future.
It’s the beginning of a big sports week in Nashville… the Titans season comes to a merciful end on Sunday and Tuesday brings the Music City Bowl and a visit from the Blues, it is a holiday feast for sports fans.
– Welcome back to Smashville Ek! Glad to see the boss in town.
– Nice article in today’s Tennessean about Preds Organist Kray Kyle. Well-deserved kudos for him… keep an ear on him during a game, he has a really nice habit of using his muisic to comment on what is going on in the game.
– Team USA is in action today at 2pm CT in the World Juniors.
– Speaking of the WJC, keep an eye on Team FInalnd’s Juuse Saros… you could be watching the replacement for Pekka Rinne in about 5-6 years.
– Merry Christmas… you’re fired. Looks like Peter DeBoer is out as New Jersey’s head coach. Kinda gives a new meaning to “boxing” day… box your stuff up…
