WINDSOR, Ont — Mariam Sylla scored a game-high 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the McGill University women’s basketball team defeated Calgary 63-50 to open the Lancers Holiday Classic tournament at the St. Denis Centre, Sunday..
It was the first game in four weeks for the Martlets, who only had three practices under their belts before resuming their post-holiday schedule.
McGill led 21-15 after the opening quarter, 32-25 at the half and 43-37 after three.
Sylla, who shot 6-for-11 from the field and went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line, was one of three Martlets to reach double figures. Teammates Dianna Ros and Carolann Cloutier added 11 points apiece, while Marie-Love Michel and Jennifer Silver each tallied nine points.
“It was a good way to start the second semester,” said McGill head coach Ryan Thorne. “Our execution wasn’t great but we worked hard to establish what we do well. We played well defensively and had solid (offensive) play from Ros and Sylla.”
McGill, which had a 38-31 edge in rebounds, shot 36.1 per cent from the field (22/61), 33.3 from three-point range (7/21) and 75.0 from the line (12/16). Calgary shot 31.9, 30.4 and 68.4, respectively.
The Dinos, who evened their record at 12-12 overall, were led by Claire Colborne, Ashley Hirons and Lawrie Saunders, each of whom netted nine points apiece.
McGill, which improved to 10-2 overall, will play Western on Monday at 5 p.m.
