MONTREAL — McGill Athletics & Recreation regretfully announces the passing of Kevin Walsh, a member of the 1971-72 Redmen basketball team that won the Quebec conference championship and was the first McGill hoops squad to qualify for the CIAU Final Four national championship tournament. He was 63.
Walsh, native of Montreal who was known for his high level of fitness and often ran 10 miles per day, succumbed to a heart attack on Dec. 24. He was the third member of that championship team to pass away this year, along with point-guard Joe Prah (April 11) and head coach Sam Wimisner (June 2).
“Although he was not a star player, Kevin was vital to our success,” said Ira Turetsky, an assistant coach on the 1971-72 Redmen team. “He brought enormous enthusiasm, dedication and steadiness, as well as great toughness, to every outing, whether at practice, or when called upon in games. He was universally popular among his teammates and possessed a wry, pointed sense of humour.”
Walsh, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound forward, also toiled for the McGill junior varsity team and guided them to a championship in 1971. After the JV title game, which was won in overtime, Wimisner said “They kept fouling Kevin, figuring he’d miss the free throws. He made every one of them. We would never have won, without him.”
In 1971-72, he helped guide the Redmen to an 18-7 record overall, including a 73-71 upset over Loyola in the Quebec University Athletic Association sudden-death final.
Walsh earned his BA from McGill, in 1974, majoring in English literature. After graduating, he worked for Batshaw Youth and Family Centre, teaching troubled youths at the Dornal Group Home.
The eldest of seven children, he is survived by siblings Kathleen, Brendan, Brian, Sean, Patrick and Timothy. Visitation will be at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home, 5610 Sherbrooke St. W., on Friday, Jan. 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by an on-site chapel service at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested making a donation to any local charity in his name.
