VANCOUVER – UBC’s men’s and women’s basketball teams are in Hawaii to finish off the 2014 calendar year with mid-season training camps and games against local competition.
The CIS No. 5-ranked UBC women, currently tied for third in the Canada West Pioneer Division with a record of 5-3, will face Hawaii-Hilo on New Year’s Eve at 3 p.m. PT. Hilo owns a 1-3 in the NCAA Div. II PacWest Conference standings.
The 3-5 Thunderbird men look to build on the momentum that began with a sweep of Saskatchewan before the holiday break.
UBC will have three outings while in Hawaii. The first will be December 30 at 10:30 a.m. PT against Chaminade, a squad that is 1-2 in the PacWest standings. Then on New Year’s Eve at 5 p.m. PT, UBC will face Hawaii Pacific in Honolulu. HPU has won three of its four conference games so far this season. The third matchup will be a scrimmage on Jan. 2 against the Hawaii Selects, a team made up of former collegiate players.
In addition to the games, both UBC teams will take the opportunity to train and practice in preparation for the first Canada West regular season games of 2015, which will take place on the weekend of Jan. 9-10 in Lethbridge, Alta., against the Pronghorns.
The first 2015 home games for the Thunderbirds will be Jan. 16-17 versus the Brandon Bobcats at War Memorial Gymnasium.
