WINDSOR, Ont — Korissa Williams scored a game-high 23 points as the No.1-ranked Windsor Lancers rallied from an early seven-point deficit to defeat No.3 McGill 55-48 to claim the Lancers Holiday Classic women’s basketball tournament at the St. Denis Centre, Tuesday. Windsor went 3-0 at their own tourney, while the Martlets won two of their three contests, with victories over Calgary and Western.

Mariam Sylla tallied 15 points for the Martlets, who saw their win streak snapped at six as their record tumbled to 11-3 overall. Sylla, who also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, shot 7-for-10 from the floor, including a three-pointer.

In a game that featured only 22 personal fouls, the result was essentially decided at the foul-line, where Windsor went 9-for-16, while McGill was awarded only two trips to the charity stripe and came away empty-handed both times.

The four-time defending national champion Lancers, who improved to 15-1 against collegiate teams, had a mammoth 47-25 advantage in rebounds, a 5-1 difference in steals and a 2-1 edge in blocked shots.

“We played hard but a lack of discipline down the stretch cost us,” said McGill head coach Ryan Thorne, who troops committed 15 turnovers that led to 17 points. “When you play the top-ranked team in the country, they make you pay for your mistakes.”

After a high-scoring opening quarter, McGill took a 23-16 lead into the second stanza but was out-pointed by a low-scoring 9-5 tally to leave the Martlets with a 28-25 edge at the half. The Lancers found their game in the third stanza, outscoring McGill 14-8 for a 39-36 lead heading into the final frame.

Teammates Dianna Ros and Carolann Cloutier added seven points apiece, while their tall centres Jennifer Silver and Alex Kiss-Rusk were limited to six and four, respectively.

Williams played all but one brief shift for Windsor, which also had a 10-point effort from Caitlyn Longmuit.

McGill, which owns an unblemished 4-0 mark in the Quebec conference, resumes league play on Jan. 8 when they host Bishop’s at the Currie gymnasium.
