Happy New Years and Up-date from Michelle Szulc

Hello ISN readers! I know that it has been a while… but it is definitely time that I update you on my most recent adventures.

In my last article, I announced that my next anthem performance would be at the CFL BC Lions game on July 25th. This was a very exciting opportunity because Geroy Simon was admitted into the Ring of Honour at BC Place Stadium. It was also the biggest crowd I had performed for thus far – almost 25,000 people! I also shared in my last write-up about how I was fundraising for my first professionally recorded EP. I am very happy to announce that I raised over $3500 and started recording my first single “Camouflage” with producer John Ellis in November. The song should be complete by early 2015.

But, back to sports and anthems! My hockey-anthem-season began in September when I sang for a Vancouver Giants exhibition game. I have been busy singing for several Giants games this season, and at one of the games, I was even fortunate enough to meet one of the co-owners of the team: the legend himself – Michael Buble! This was a very exciting moment for me because I look up to his many accomplishments. I also know the struggle he experienced to get to where he is, and that is very admirable. And I love his music, but I think that goes without saying.

I have also been working as the Special Events and Game Day Coordinator for the Coquitlam Express in the BCHL. With this position has come the responsibility of occasionally singing anthems for the team. On another note, for those of you who follow the PIJHL, you would know that my hometown team, the North Delta Devils, were moved to Langley this year – they are now known as the Langley Knights. Even though I was sad to see the team move out of Delta, I was fortunate enough to sing for the new team this month and I was very happy with the changes that had been made to the organization. I sang both the Star-Spangled Banner and O Canada at the game on December 18th. The team was excited to honour their American players before they went home for the holidays. I will also be singing for the Knights again on January 4th as they host a special Canucks Alumni charity event. There will be a game starting at 5pm, followed by a buffet and open-bar dinner at 8pm. I will be sharing the spotlight with Mr. O Canada himself, Mark Donnelly, as I sing the American Anthem, and Mark will be performing his famous rendition of O Canada. I will also be playing a short acoustic set at the beginning of the dinner, including a couple new originals that no one has heard!

Now, the next BIG thing I must ask is… did you watch the Pat Quinn tribute at the Vancouver Canucks game on November 25th? If you did, you would probably recognize that the anthem singer was ME! As many of you already know, November 23rd was a sad day for the hockey community, as we said good-bye to Mr. Pat Quinn. In order to honour Mr. Quinn and his many accomplishments, the Canucks showed a beautiful collection of moments in the form of videos and pictures on the Jumbotron at Rogers Arena, which was accompanied by a moving rendition of Danny Boy, performed a cappella by Mark Donnelly. After the tribute, I had a very tough act to follow, as I led the city in the singing of both the Star-Spangled Banner and O Canada. To my surprise, SportsNet also televised both anthems – I am extremely thankful.

I am further excited to announce that I will be returning to the Vancouver Stealth for the 2015 season to once again sing the Star-Spangled Banner. I will be performing at all games featuring a visiting American team. Lastly, I want to thank the city of Victoria for once again providing me with the opportunity to sing O Canada in your beautiful city! I sang for the Victoria Royals on both Saturday December 27th and Sunday December 28th. Although it was a very quick trip, it is always great to catch up with friends and to meet new people.

I hope that you enjoyed my newest update, and please stay-tuned for my single release and more anthem performances!
