It was the perfect storm of career versus health. I worked longer and harder in and out of the studio this year becoming more and more consumed by my passion for my work. Funny thing is, no matter how much you love your job, your body will remind you that you need to take stock and pay attention to the signs.
It was a year of career high’s and even an award, fighting through my health challenges and sliding into home base at year’s end. I lived a very full year, and I would not change it for anything. Here are my top 10 highlights from 2014…
#6 – my Carey Price painting grabs some attention. In it’s first week this piece saw over 1600 views and over 700 plays of the video of the making of the piece. Thanks …to Habs nation, and AllHabs Hockey Magazine, for the original pick-up and push out of the piece to the masses. Also, thank you to hockey bloggers Dennis Kane and Stephen Smith of Puckstruck for sharing my Carey. http://canadianpopart.squarespace.com/blog/2014/5/9/a-timely-painting-grabs-attention
#5 ‘Canadiens Gothic’ win’s a People’s Choice Award at Art: Objet de Sport, Gallery @501 – Sherwood Park, Alberta. This painting marked the inception of the People of Canada Portrait Project. Thank you again Penny Rogers Photography & Writing for the reference photo and inspiration. #GoHabsGo
#4 – Out of the studio. Every year I take a few trips that get me out of the studio, into art museums, and out in nature with my camera. This year we hit The Frye Museum in Seattle, The Maryhill Museum in Goldendale WA, The Vancouver Art Gallery for Douglas Coupland’s festival of Canadiana, Painted Hills Oregon, Mt. Baker and Mt. Saint Helens. Batteries recharged.
#1 – In mid November I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. December 17th I had a radical hysterectomy and lymph node removal. Two days ago I got the best phone call of my life, I am ‘all clear’. Surgery was 100% successful and I do not need to undergo chemo or radiation treatments. I went from diagnosis to all clear in just over a month. I am not sure how I got so lucky, but I am certainly going to take this good fortune and run with it into 2015 and beyond. Wishing you love, health, happiness and a good ‘ole belly laugh today and every day of your life. Happy New Year!
