MONTREAL – Led by fifth year forward Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team captured gold at the Theresa Humes tournament hosted by the Concordia Stingers this past weekend.

Brooker, who is tied for fourth in OUA conference scoring following the first half of the season, registered an impressive 10 points in just three games as the Hawks posted a perfect 3-0 record. Laurier defeated Mt. Allison 4-1, Laurentian 5-2 and Team Quebec 5-4 in a shootout to leave Montreal as tournament champions.

In Laurier’s opening game against the Mounties, Brooker registered a hat-trick and assisted on another goal. She followed that up with a goal and an assist in the Hawks victory over the Voyageurs. Then, in the championship game against Team Quebec, the four-time OUA All-Star had two goals and two assists in the third period as Laurier rallied from a 4-0 deficit to force a shootout. Danelle Im of Toronto, would score the only goal of the shootout to give the Hawks the win.

Goaltender Amanda Smith of Burlington, Ont., picked up the victories in the games against Laurentian and Team Quebec while rookie Nicholle Kovach of Schomberg, Ont., earned the win in game one against Mt. Allison.

Other standout performances from the weekend included Megan Howe of Stratford, Ont., picking up two goals and an assist, Jessie Hurrell of Palgrave, Ont., earning a goal and two assists while Tammy Freiburger of Wingham, Ont., and Heather Platt of Toronto, each had a goal and an assist.

The three victories wrap up a very strong holiday schedule for the purple and gold who also earned a 2-2 draw with Guelph and lost a hard-fought 1-0 game to the Alberta Pandas. Laurier finishes the holiday break with a 3-1-1 record.

The Hawks will look to carry the momentum earned from the tournament victory into regular season play which resumes this Friday, January 9, when Laurier hosts the York Lions. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
