MONTREAL – Vincent Dufort of Smiths Falls, Ont., and Mariam Sylla of Conakry, Guinea are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan. 4, 2015.
Dufort, captain of the men’s basketball team, earned all-star honours at the Rod Shoveller Memorial Tournament in Halifax last weekend, where McGill finished third of eight teams with a 2-1 record. The 6-foot-4, 191-pound shooting guard totalled 39 points and 27 rebounds to go along with 13 assists and six steals in three games. A 22-year-old physical education senior, he shot 50.0 per cent from the floor (13/26), 38.5 from the three-point arc (5/13) and 72.7 at the free-throw line (8/11). He was recruited to McGill in 2010 out of Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute.
Sylla, a 6-foot-1 forward with the No.3-ranked basketball Martlets, scored 42 points and grabbed 21 rebounds as McGill finished with a 2-1 record at the Lancers Holiday Classic tournament in Windsor, Dec. 27-30. The Martlets defeated Calgary and Western by identical 63-50 scores to stretch their win streak to six before losing 55-48 to No.1-ranked Windsor in the final. A 22-year-old pharmacology junior who was honoured last November as a CIS Top 8 Academic All-Canadian, Sylla shot an impressive 60 per cent from the floor (18/30), was 1-for-1 from three-point range and shot 71.4 from the foul-line (5/7). She was also credited with a pair of blocked shots, one steal and two assists. Prior to enrolling at McGill, Sylla starred in the Quebec CEGEP league for College Montmorency.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
