Brandon Wheat Kings have bolstered their blueline

(ISN) – Brandon, MB. – The Brandon Wheat Kings have bolstered their blueline with the acquisition of former Spokane Chief captain Reid Gow.

Brandon general manager and head coach Kelly McCrimmon is pleased to announce that the Eastern Conference leading Wheat Kings have obtained the playing rights to the 20-year old Killarney product in exchange for a fifth round bantam draft choice.

A former first round bantam draft choice (16th overall 2009) of the Chiefs, Gow played four full seasons with Spokane scoring seventeen goals and 146 points in 229 WHL games.

During the 2013-14 season, the former Southwest AAA Midget Cougar scored six goals and 56 assists for 62 points, good for fifth in the WHL in scoring among defencemen, one back of ex-Wheat King Ryan Pulock. He also finished third on the Chiefs in scoring, behind forwards Mitch Holmberg and Mike Aviani. He currently stands 39th in franchise history in games played. In 27 playoff games with the Chiefs, he scored three goals and 11 points.

A former winner of the WHL’s Scholastic Player of the Year honours, Gow did not return to Spokane this season, choosing instead to enroll at the University of Manitoba. As a member of the Bisons during the first half of the season, the 6′ 190 lb defenceman scored two goals and 7 points in eighteen games.

“The acquisition of Reid will solidify our blueline,” says McCrimmon. “As well, his experience and leadership will be valuable for our team.”

Gow is expected to arrive in Brandon on Monday and will make his Wheat Kings’ debut on Tuesday when the Everett Silvertips pay their first visit to Westman Place in two years.
