Canada looking for its 16th gold medal all-time

(ISN) – TORONTO, Ont. – Canada’s National Junior Team will play for the gold medal at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship after a 5-1 win over Slovakia in semifinal action on Sunday night.

Canada will face Russia in Monday’s gold medal game at the Air Canada Centre, with puck drop scheduled for 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The game can be seen live on TSN/RDS, the official broadcasters of Hockey Canada, and heard on TSN Radio in English and 98.5FM Radio in French.

It is the 11th time in the last 14 years Canada’s National Junior Team has reached the gold medal game at the IIHF World Junior Championship; it is looking for its 16th gold medal all-time, and first since 2009.

On Sunday, Nic Petan (Delta, B.C./Portland, WHL) led the offence with a hat trick, while Connor McDavid (Newmarket, Ont./Erie, OHL) and Curtis Lazar (Vernon, B.C./Ottawa, NHL) had three assists apiece to help Canada beat Slovakia for the second time in the tournament.

Anthony Duclair (Laval, Que./N.Y. Rangers, NHL) and Shea Theodore (Aldergrove, B.C./Seattle, WHL) had the other goals for Canada, which took control of a 1-0 game with goals 1:26 apart late in the second period, and outshot Slovakia 22-4 in the third. Zach Fucale (Rosemère, Que./Quebec, QMJHL) made 13 saves to record his fourth win in as many starts.
