WHL would like to congratulate the 10 current WHL players

(ISN) – CALGARY, AB – The Western Hockey League would like to congratulate the 10 current WHL players on Team Canada’s National Junior Team roster who earned the gold medal at the 2015 World Junior Hockey Championship tonight in Toronto.

WHL graduate and Team Canada Captain Curtis Lazar as well as Assistant Coach Dave Lowry (Victoria Royals) also played key roles as Canada defeated Russia by a score of 5-4.

Returnees Sam Reinhart (West Vancouver, BC / Kootenay ICE) and Nic Petan (Delta, BC / Portland Winterhawks) finished the tournament atop the scoring race with 11 each through seven games played.

Canada’s dominant blueline included five WHL rearguards. Josh Morrissey (Calgary, AB / Kelowna Rockets), Madison Bowey (Winnipeg, MB / Kelowna Rockets), Dillon Heatherington (Calgary, AB / Swift Current Broncos), Joe Hicketts (Kamloops, BC / Victoria Royals) and Shea Theodore (Aldergrove, BC / Seattle Thunderbirds) all played critical roles on the backend. Kelowna teammates Morrissey and Bowey each finished the tournament with four points.

Brayden Point (Calgary, AB / Moose Jaw Warriors) logged important minutes for Canada in the final two games while Jake Virtanen (Abbotsford, BC / Calgary Hitmen) had a strong tournament.

Eric Comrie (Edmonton, AB / Tri-City Americans) had a 1.50 goals against average and one shutout in two games played en route to the gold medal.

Team Russia defencemen Rinat Valiev (Kootenay ICE) and Ivan Provorov (Brandon Wheat Kings) earned the silver medal in the loss.
