New year for Canada WNT

It’s a new year.

Canada’s women’s national team held their first training session of the 2015 calendar year on Thursday 8 January, a two-hour session in Shenzhen, China PR in advance of this month’s Four Nations Tournament. It will be a big year for the Canadian team, with the highlight FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ less than five months away on the calendar.

“We’re not concerning ourselves too much about what is in the future,” said Canadian head coach John Herdman. “We want to be present in every moment that we have on the training field and off the pitch to get ourselves ready and be the best that we can be.”

Canada is one of 24 finalists for this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™, which will be played from coast to coast across Canada from 6 June to 5 July. As hosts, Canada will kick off the tournament on 6 June in Edmonton in the opening group match against China PR.

Canada will schedule a number of preparatory matches in advance of the final competition, starting with the Four Nations Tournament this month. Canada will face Korea Republic on 11 January, Mexico on 13 January, and China PR on 15 January, with all matches to be played at the Shenzhen Bao’an Sports Center.

Said Herdman, the team is “really just cherishing every moment that we get as a group together (so that we can) make something happen for our country.”

Following the January window, Canada will fill the March international window with four matches at the annual Cyprus Women’s Cup. Those 2015 matches will be played from 4-11 March, with the draw of opponents yet to be announced.
