Cascade wrestlers win five warm-up matches in Edmonton

On the eve of the Golden Bear Invitational in Edmonton, the University of the Fraser Valley wrestling team turned in a series of solid results in exhibition matches against the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Cascades combined to win five of eight matches on Friday, which should serve as a nice confidence boost for the group prior to the official Canada West meet hosted by the University of Alberta on Saturday.

“The focus for tonight was to get loose from the travel and set the tone for our matches tomorrow,” said Cascades co-coach Arjan Bhullar. “The group competed well, and we’re looking to build on this. February is fast approaching, we are going to have to really buckle down over the next month and a bit.”

Winners for the Cascades on Friday included the sibling duo Jasmit (82 kg) and Chanmit Phulka (100 kg), Aso Palani (6 1 kg), Aman Kaler (65 kg) and Brad Hildebrandt (90 kg), who picked up UFV’s first pin of the weekend.

“Great pace and great attitude by Brad,” Bhullar said. “So far this season he’s our most improved athlete.”

Kaler was the only Cascade to wrestle twice against the Huskies, and he split his two matches. Manny Kahlon (120 kg) and Dave Sharma (57 kg) – in his first match back since dislocating his elbow – also sustained exhibition defeats.

On the horizon for the UFV wrestling program is its first Canada West home meet – the Cascade Classic on Feb. 1. at the Envision Athletic Centre.
