(ISN) – The Portland Winterhawks (23-18-0-3) earned a 5-3 win over the Vancouver Giants (19-21-1-1) Saturday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The Giants opened the scoring 6:56 into the first on a goal by Tyler Benson, but the Hawks evened it at the 9:47 mark on a power play when Miles Koules fired the puck from above the left faceoff circle high over Vancouver netminder Payton Lee’s shoulder to make it 1-1.
Portland went ahead at the 12:37 mark when Keegan Iverson jammed it in for a 2-1 lead, but the Giants tied it when Benson scored on a 5-on-3 power play at 15:19 to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the second.
It remained deadlocked until the 9:48 mark of the second, when the Alex Schoenborn poked it past Lee on a power play for a 3-2 advantage for the Hawks. Portland then when ahead by two when Oliver Bjorkstrand scored shorthanded at the 12:16 mark for a 4-2 lead. Zane Jones scored for Vancouver at 15:47 to cut Portland’s lead to 4-3 entering the third.
With it still a one-goal game late in the third, Chase De Leo made a nifty move to set up Bjorkstrand on the doorstep for his second goal of the night and a 5-3 Portland lead that stood as the final.
De Leo’s third period assist extended his point streak to 17 games, a career-high and the longest in the league this season. Meanwhile, Bjorkstrand’s three points in the game came just 24 hours after posting four points in a win over Spokane last night.
Adin Hill picked up the win in net for the Hawks, with 44 saves on 47 shots.
Portland was 2-3 on the power play and 3-4 on the penalty kill with a shorthanded goal.
The Hawks will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Kamloops to take on the Blazers.
