OTTAWA – Olympic and world championship medallist Ryan Cochrane and Swimming Canada’s seven-member Talent ID Tour team are among the Canadians scheduled to compete at the second stop on the Arena Pro Swim Series circuit Thursday to Saturday in Austin, Tex.
It is the first competition in 2015 for Cochrane, whose primary focus this year will be the FINA World Championships set for Kazan, Russia in late July.
Cochrane enjoyed a successful 2014 season as he defended his 400-m freestyle and 1,500-m freestyle Commonwealth Games titles. He also added medal performances at the Pan Pacific Championships and the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m).
Other senior national team members include Cochrane’s teammates from the High Performance Centre – Victoria Hilary Caldwell (seeded No. 1 in the 200-m backstroke) and Alec Page as well as Yuril Kisil and Tera Van Beilen from HPC-Vancouver.
The seven Swimming Canada Talent ID Tour athletes are Javier Acevedo of Ajax, Ont., Kaelan Freund of Lethbridge, Alta., Josh Zakala of Kelowna, B.C., and Tim Zeng of North Vancouver, all 16, on the male side, and females Danielle Hanus, 16, of Newmarket, Ont., Danika Huizinga, 15,of Ajax and Lili Margitai, 17, of Edmonton.
Swimming Canada has enjoyed international success with its developmental and junior aged swimmers as it builds towards becoming a leading nation in the sport by 2020. These young swimmers in Texas this weekend are a big part of that picture.
As part of the Talent ID team they trained this month at the High Performance Centres in Victoria, Vancouver and Toronto where they had an opportunity to upgrade their training and improve their racing abilities before heading to the U.S.
Cochrane won’t be the only big international star at the meet. Others include American Olympic champions Ryan Lochte and Katie Ledecky as well as Hungarian double world medley champion Katinka Hosszu.
Preliminaries each day in Austin start at 10 a.m. ET with finals at 7 p.m.
