Vancouver, BC – At the midway point of the Canada West regular season, the No. 4 UBC Thunderbirds (7-3) play host to the Brandon Bobcats (3-9) for a pair of games at War Memorial Gym this weekend.
This weekend marks the first home games of 2015 for the Thunderbirds who are coming off of a fantastic opening weekend in Lethbridge where they swept their hosts by 21 points the first night and 40 points the second night.
“It was great to see the way we played the full 40 minutes in both games last weekend,” says UBC head coach Deb Huband. “We managed to hold our intensity and focus, which was especially great for us as all of our players saw some court time in Lethbridge.”
Huband is looking for more of that consistent intensity from her team this weekend.
The Bobcats will be coming to Vancouver hungry to break their five-game losing streak. The team has a 3-9 record so far this season. They were swept by the University of Saskatchewan Huskies last weekend, the team currently tied with UBC for third in the division.
Brandon is led by Alyssa Montgomery who is averaging 12.4 points per game. Hailing from Silver Spring, Maryland, she is one of three US products on the Bobcats roster, joining starting guards Mikaela Stanton (Oceanside, CA) and Aleah Bridges (Berkeley, CA).
Meanwhile, the Thunderbirds are hoping for another opportunity to show off the depth of their bench. Huband says she is proud of the progress the team has made in creating chemistry no matter who is on the floor.
“We took a giant step forward in that regard last weekend and we’re hoping to replicate that against Brandon.”
The action gets underway this Friday at 6pm PST at War Memorial Gym. Saturday’s rematch will follow at 5pm PST.
