QUEBEC CITY — The McGill track and field team won two events on the men’s side and an identical number on the women’s side but both squads settled for third place overall at the Laval Invitational, Saturday, at Centre PEPS.
Finishing atop the podium for the Redmen were two engineering students, namely Riley van Ryswyk of Surrey, B.C., and Hao Xu of Houston, Texas. Van Ryswyk, a senior, cleared a height of 4.50 metres to capture the the pole vault, while Xu, a junior, took the high jump with a leap of 1.98m.
Winning gold for the Martlets was Montrealer Annabelle Williams and Vanisa Ezukuse of Mississauga, Ont. Williams, a linguistics junior, topped all high jumpers with a height of 1.60m, while Ezukuse, a science sophomore in nursing, produced a winning toss of 11.17m in the shotput.
Laval won the men’s division with 124 points, followed by Sherbrooke (56), McGill (29) and UQAC (6). The Rouge et Or also took the women’s division with 101 points, followed by Sherbrooke (56), McGill (42) and UQAC (5).
The fourth meet of the indoor season will be the 20th annual McGill Team Challenge, Jan. 23-24. The two-day competition, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse in the McGill Sports Centre, will feature about 900 athletes, including a number of olympians, and is annually the largest indoor track meet in Canada.
