AUSTIN, Texas – Dominique Bouchard of North Bay, Ont., upstaged another American star on Saturday for her second gold medal this week to conclude the second stop on the Pro Swim Series.
Bouchard won the women’s 100-m backstroke in one minute and 00.68 seconds. She edged three-time Olympic champion Nathalie Coughlin of the U.S. second in 1:00.70. Katinka Hosszu of Hungary was third in 1:01.00 and Canadian-born Taylor Ruck, now living in Arizona, was fourth in 1:01.25.
Danielle Hanus of Newmarket, one of seven members of Swimming Canada’s Talent ID team, took fifth spot in 1:01.92.
On Friday, Bouchard upset Olympic bronze medallist Elizabeth Beisel to win the 200-m backstroke.
Canadian foursomes were 1-2 in the men’s 4×100-m medley relay. The University of Calgary took the gold in 3:47.27 with Russell Wood, Bogdan Knezevic, Wyatt Yarish and David Woodman. The UBC Thunderbirds followed in 3:49.47 with Marshal Parker, Luke Reilly, Coleman Allen and Yuri Kisil.
Edmonton Keyano was fourth, CHENA Swim Club from North Vancouver fifth and the University of Alberta sixth.
Fiona Doyle of Calgary added a bronze in the women’s 100-m breaststroke clocking 1:08.99. Rachel Nicol of Lethbridge, Alta., was seventh.
Allen was sixth in the 200-m butterfly while Noemie Thomas of Richmond, B.C., and Jacomie Strydom of Edmonton were sixth and eighth in the women’s 200-m fly.
