MONTREAL – The McGill University women’s hockey team will be holding their annual outdoor practice in Town of Mt. Royal Park on Wednesday afternoon. It marks the sixth time in seven years that the Martlets, currently ranked No.2 in Canadian Interuniversity Sport with a 10-3-0 record in the Quebec conference, will be holding their version of hockey’s “Winter Classic”.

“We like to try and do some different things to make practice fun,” said Peter Smith, who has guided the team to four CIS national championships and owns a 410-148-31 record in 589 games over his 15 seasons as head coach of the Martlets. “We initiated this outdoor practice (in 2009) as a team-building event and selected the TMR site because one of our players at that time, Catherine Ward, was from that region of the city. We’ve been treated well from the people in TMR and have had very positive feedback from our group, many of whom have not not had much, if any, experience of playing outdoors.”

Ward, a two-time all-Canadian, patrolled the Martlets blue line for three seasons from 2006 to 2009 and became the team’s all-time top-scoring defenceman with 34-104-138 in 109 games overall (a record since broken by Cathy Chartrand, who had 80-178-258 in 180 contests). After graduating with a B.Com, Ward completed another degree at Boston College, where she was a second-team all-American, and has helped Canada win gold medals in each of the last two Olympics.

The current edition of the Martlets also has one player from TMR, namely Erica Starnino, a freshman rearguard who has followed in Ward’s footsteps, first to Dawson College, then into the Desautels faculty of management at McGill.

Wednesday’s training session is slated for the TMR outdoor rink, bordered between Dunkirk Road, Avenue Montgomery and Chemin Churchill, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The Martlets are tied for first-place in the RSEQ conference with the Montreal Carabins (10-2-0) and wlll return to action this Sunday when they play at third-place Concordia (4-6-2).
