(ISN) – It’s been a chock-a-block week of wins for the Camosun Chargers mens’ and women’s volleyball teams who kicked-off the second half of the season with a pair of PACWEST Athlete of the Week honors following their solid sweep over the UFV Cascades on the January 16-17 weekend.
In women’s action, fifth-year setter Erika Sheen (Lethbridge, AB) ran the Chargers offense to lead Camosun to this week’s 12-2 record. Erika delivered over 50 assists and 14 points over the two-day series against the #9 nationally-ranked Cascades and was named PACWEST Women’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week for her outstanding performance.
“As a setter Erika has found a number of ways to challenge our opposition,” comments Chargers Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Chris Dahl. “First and foremost she’s a setter and she does a great job of looking after the offence and taking care of her hitters. She continues to add to her game though and puts the opposition in difficult situations with her serve, her block and when she goes on the offensive… I suspect she’s an incredibly difficult setter to play against and we like that!”
The #4 nationally-ranked Chargers took UFV down in three straight in both Friday and Saturday’s matches (25-19, 25-21, 27-25 and 25-16, 25-23, 25-14). The Chargers are #2 in the PACWEST standings for the fourth consecutive week.
“I like our start to the second half of the season, not because we picked up two more wins in a sweep though,” Coach Dahl asserts. “I’m more impressed with how we came out after 5-6 weeks away from competition. You don’t have to watch UFV for long to notice that they have the ability to play you really tough and they had those moments this weekend, but I liked our response.”
The men also produced back-to-back straight set victories over the weekend (Fri: 25-19, 25-23, 25-20 and Sat: 25-20, 25-20, 25-22) moving up to #10 CCAA National Ranking with a record of 11-3. Second-year leftside Cam Fennema (Pacific Christian) was instrumental in both Friday and Saturday’s wins, earning his first PACWEST Men’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week award.
“Cam was simply superb in our back to back 3-0 wins this weekend,” states Chargers Men’s Volleyball Head Coach Charles Parkinson. “He was virtually unstoppable offensively and scored 24 kills over the two matches. More impressive than the total points, however, was the fact that he committed only a single attacking error in the entire weekend and registered a combined efficiency for both matches of over .700. He also chipped in with 17 digs and 3 blocks and was a key part of Camosun’s primary passing line up.”
This weekend, the Chargers travel to Abbotsford to face off against the CBC Bearcats. In women’s action, the Chargers take on a winless B’Cats squad who, at 0-16, sit at the bottom of the PACWEST standings.
“Over the years we’ve developed a tremendous respect for CBC,” says Coach Dahl. “They’re a well-coached team, but of greatest significance, they’re a great people team. It starts at the top. Their head coach is someone I have tremendous respect for on all fronts. I look forward to the CBC weekends on the schedule and our athletes do as well.”
As the #2 team in the PACWEST, the Chargers men take on the #4 B’cats who are looking to improve their record of 7-9.
“CBC is a completely different team from the first semester with a number of experienced pick-ups joining the squad after Christmas,” asserts Coach Parkinson. “Leigh Goosen remains their dominant threat in the middle and from the service line, but now he has an excellent setter in Jason Warkentin who can find him almost anywhere on the court. Their consecutive 5 set wins over VIU at the home of the Mariners speaks to their transformation. To be successful we will need to continue our strong serving and put up a big block to slow their hitters down. Defensively I’m confident that we are one of the best teams in the league as long as we maintain our discipline and shape but the key will be our ability to convert for points in transition when we make the great digs in the back row. It should be a great test for us and we are looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Bearcats den!”
