Race from 2014 McGill Team Challenge

MONTREAL — A number of Olympians are expected to participate in the 20th annual McGill Team Challenge track and field meet, Jan. 23-24. The two-day competition, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse on the campus of McGill University, will feature about 900 athletes and is annually billed as the largest indoor track meet in Canada.

The event is expected to draw at least 26 university teams this year — just shy of last year’s record mark of 30 — all hoping to reach qualifying standards for the CIS national championships in Windsor, Ont., March 12-14. CIS participating institutions include 11 from the Ontario (OUA) conference, nine from the RSEQ in Quebec and six from the Atlantic (AUS) region.

Tomlinson Fieldhouse is located inside the McGill University Sports Centre at 475 Pine Avenue West. Tickets, available at the door, will be $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Children 12-and-under are admitted free.

“It is without a doubt the Canadian flagship meet for the indoor season and gives us the opportunity to see what the top teams have in the way of talent as we prepare for Nationals,” says Dennis Barrett, in his 30th year as head coach at McGill. “It is shaping up to be a top-notch meet, based upon the entries that we have received. The field will be strong and it will feature some national level competitors as well as an international flavour. This meet offers a very competitive opportunity for athletes to qualify for the CIS championships.”

The highest profile races this weekend will be the men’s 60m, 300m, 600m and 3000m, along with the women’s 60m, 300m and 800m.

Friday’s schedule, which runs from 12:15 p.m. to 9 p.m., begins with the women’s pentathlon (60m hurdles), followed by the weight throw, high jump, long jump, shot put, 60m, 1000m, pole vault, 3000m, 800m and the 4×200 and 4×800 relays.

Finals for the women’s 60m dash is slated for 5:50 p.m. where everyone will be chasing both the meet record (7.34 seconds)  and the Fieldhouse record (7.29). The men’s 60m final is set for 5:55 p.m., and the marks to aim for are 6.71 (meet) and the 6.56 (Fieldhouse).

The Saturday schedule begins with men’s pentathlon (hurdles) at 9:30 a.m. and is expected to conclude by 5:30 p.m. The 60m hurdles final is set for 10:40 a.m., followed by the 5000m, 600m, 300m, 1500m, 4x400m relay and 1000m.

A complete schedule is posted below.

McGill’s 58-member roster features 46 athletes from across Canada and nine from the U.S., plus one apiece from Jamaica, Ecuador and France.  The breakdown of Canadians has 19 from Ontario and 15 from Quebec, plus four from B.C., three apiece from Alberta and Nova Scotia, in addition to two from Manitoba.

One of the top McGill male athletes to watch is Dylan Golow, a neuroscience senior from Barrie, Ont., who will be looking to break his school record in the pentathlon (3,571 points), which he set last year on Feb. 23, 2014.

Among the key McGill women is Annabelle Williams, a linguistics junior from Montreal, who is the team’s only athlete to strike gold in all three meets this season. She was part of the winning 4×200 relay (1:46.31) at the Martlet Classic on Nov. 30, won the high jump (1.55m) at the Sherbrooke Invitational (Jan. 10) and bettered that mark last week with a winning leap of 1.60m at the Laval Invitational (Jan. 17).

Among the university teams expected to attend the meet are Brock, Carleton, Concordia, Dalhousie, Guelph, Laval, Lakehead, Laurentian, McGill, McMaster, Moncton, Montreal, Ottawa, Queen’s, Sherbrooke, Saint Mary’s, St.FX, St. Thomas, Toronto, UNB, UQAM, UQAC, UQAO, UQTR, Western and York.
