(ISN) – VICTORIA – Ten athletes from the University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s track teams are lacing up for the 43rd annual Golden Bear Open on Jan. 23-24 in Edmonton, Alta. Calgary, Saskatchewan and Alberta were the top three finishers last year, and the Vikes will be looking for another chance to clock in strong indoor times before the Canada West Indoor Championships on Feb. 27-28.
On the women’s side, Edmonton natives Caroline Harrell and Nicole Soderberg will take part in the 600-m dash. Last year’s Academic All-Canadian Soderberg will race the 1000-m alongside 1500-m champion and fellow 2013-14 Academic All-Canadian Grace Annear. CIS 4×800 gold medallists Soderberg and Annear will compete against two-time Canada West Outstanding Track Performer of the Year Jenna Westaway in the middle distance races.
Representing the men for the 4×400-m relay are Adam Paul-Morris, Tyler Smith, Brendon Restall and Nicholas Taylor. Second-year UBC transfer Paul-Morris and 600-m track specialist Restall will be athletes to watch for in the 600-m race.
Cross-country star and distance runner Cole Peterson will feature in the 1000-m race alongside Canada West-ranked No. 2 Gareth Hadfield of Calgary and No. 3 Wyatt Baiton from Regina, while rookie Derrick Evans from Ontario will partake the 1500-m and 3000-m races.
