(ISN) – Kreischberg, Austria – Participating in the first FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships of her career, Cassie Sharpe, 22, put down some of the best performances of her life to win silver today in women’s halfpipe final in Kreischberg, Austria.

The native of Comox, BC, clinched her medal on her third and last run of the evening and scored an 81.00 to finish just behind Virginie Faivre (83.80) of Switzerland. Mirjam Jaeger (79.80), also of Switzerland, finished third.

“This is crazy,” said an ecstatic Sharpe. “I landed my first two runs, but the judges wanted me to grab my flares. So you give the judges what they want. I grabbed my flares (on the last run) and they rewarded me. I went big for the last run and brought all the pieces together that I’ve worked so hard for. We had a crazy training camp in Calgary before coming here and my coaches were amazing. They made me a better skier in a week and I owe my consistency to them.”

The week was a family event for Sharpe. Her brother, Darcy, also competed yesterday and finished fourth overall in snowboard slopestyle.

“My sister did amazing,” said Darcy Sharpe. “She put down several good runs and seemed like she was having fun out there. I’m really stoked. It’s been a good week. I wished her good luck before the race and gave her a hug. She did it all. I’m super happy for her.”

Also, representing Canada in the six-woman halfpipe final was Keltie Hansen (Edmonton, AB) who finished sixth overall with a score of 60.40.

“It’s not quite the result I was looking for from the judges,” said Hansen. “I’d like to leave on a positive note though. I did land all three of my nines tonight. I’m happy about that. I’m so excited for Cassie to be on the podium too. It’s her first year on the team, so for her to come out and medal is really awesome. I’m super proud of her.”

In the men’s final, Matt Margetts (Penticton, BC) finished in 9th place overall with a high score of 46.00.
