Simon d’Artois Wins Historic Gold Medal at X Games

Simon d’Artois (Whistler, BC) won a historic SuperPipe gold medal at the Winter X Games Aspen 2015 today. The gold is the first ever won by a Canadian in the Men’s Ski Superpipe at the X Games.

D’Artois led the competition early on and set the pace with a 90.33 on his first run. The score was good enough for the first two rounds of competition before France’s Kevin Rolland scored a 92.33 to take over the lead.

Shortly after, in his third and final run, d’Artois impressed the judges even more and scored a 93.00 to win the title. Rolland finished second and American Alex Ferreira came third (91.66).

“It was really special for me to land all three runs,” said d’Artois. “I’m thrilled to come out in first place. I was nervous after seeing Kevin Rolland. I’m happy I came away with the title. I was confident after the first two runs. It put less pressure on me. My first run really set the bar. I felt great going into the third run. I knew what I had to do if I wanted to win. I stuck to my game plan and I was rewarded.”

For d’Artois, the win is the biggest of his young career and comes on the eve of his 23rd birthday. This was d’Artois’ second X Games appearance. He finished 14th in 2014.

“I wouldn’t be here today without all my supporters,” said d’Artois. “I had so much help fundraising to make it here today. It’s really special to be here now. I couldn’t be more thankful to all my supporters, family and friends. It’s made a big difference in my life. Even my teammates. They all did amazing tonight. They’re a big part of all this.”

Noah Bowman (Calgary, AB) and Mike Riddle (Sherwood, Park) also competed in Sunday’s SuperPipe eight-man final. Bowman, 22, scored a high of 86.33 to finish in sixth place. Riddle, 28, finished in eighth with a high of 78.33.
