(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – A small, but quality, roster of University of Victoria Vikes athletes travelled to Edmonton, Alta, for the Golden Bear Open on Jan. 23-24. The two-day meet hosted by Alberta highlighted six CIS schools from four different provinces this season.

It was in the men’s 600-m dash where the Vikes brought home a gold and a silver medal on the second day of the event. Second year Adam Paul-Morris edged teammate Tyler Smith to win the 600-m in a new meet record time of 1:19.63 to Smith’s 1:19.70.

Third year and 2014 CIS 600-m gold medallist Brendon Restall finished the 600-m race fourth (1:20.74), almost half a second behind Calgary’s Garrett King, who toed the line third in 1:20.36.

“Today’s results just shows the depth and competitiveness within our Vikes men’s team,” said Keith Butler, Junior Varsity Coach. “It strengthens us as a team for the next meets to come.”

Rookie Derrick Evans finished the men’s 1500-m run this afternoon with a personal best of 4:05.06.

On the women’s side, fellow rookie Caroline Harrell finished 8th in the 600-m dash with a time of 1:38.65. She was the lone female Vike to compete today with third-year teammate Nicole Soderberg scratched off Saturday’s list.

For the first years, the Golden Bear Open was an opportunity to continue improving their racing times before the Canada West Track and Field Championship in Winnipeg on Feb. 27.

On Jan. 23, Evans clocked his personal best in the 3000-m race with a time of 8.49.71, while men’s team captain Cole Peterson won the 1000-m race in a Canada West leading time of 2:26.12, narrowly missing the CIS qualifying standard of 2:25.16.

Edmonton native Peterson also teamed with Restall, Paul-Morris and Smith to win the men’s 4×400-m relay in a nation leading time of 3:18.55, achieving the CIS Championship automatic qualifying standard.

Up next, the Vikes will prepare for their next meet, the UW Invitational, at the University of Washington in Seattle, on Jan. 31.
