OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning University Cup champion Alberta Golden Bears top the CIS men’s hockey rankings for the 14th time in as many national polls this season.

The Bears (22-3-1) received all 16 first-place votes from the media panel for the fourth straight week despite suffering only their fourth loss in 26 conference games.

Behind Alberta, every other Top-10 team moves up or down one position this week with the exception of the McGill Redmen (17-5), who remain in eighth place.

Rounding out the new rankings are the No. 2 Acadia Axemen (18-4-2 / up one), No. 3 UNB Varsity Reds (18-3-2 / down one), No. 4 Calgary Dinos (18-8 / up one), No. 5 UQTR Patriotes (17-3-2 / down one), No. 6 Saint Mary’s Huskies (16-7-1 / up one), No. 7 Windsor Lancers (18-4-1 / down one), No. 9 Mount Royal Cougars (16-9-1 / up one) and No. 10 Carleton Ravens (17-5 / down one).

The top-ranked Golden Bears suffered a rare setback last Friday when they let a 2-0 third-period lead slip away en route to a 3-2 overtime loss on home ice to Mount Royal. The reigning CIS champs rebounded the following night however with a resounding 7-1 win over the Cougars in Calgary.

Alberta has long secured first place in the Canada West standings and holds a nine-point lead over second-place Calgary with two games remaining. The Canada West regular schedule wraps up this weekend – including an Alberta-Saskatchewan doubleheader in Saskatoon – as an all-star team from the conference will then head to Spain to represent Canada at the Winter Universiade from Feb. 3 to 14.

The Bears and Mount Royal weren’t the only Top-10 squads to drop a game over the past week as Acadia, UNB, UQTR, Saint Mary’s and Windsor also suffered a loss.

In the most-anticipated matchup of the past seven days, Saturday night in Wolfville, N.S., the Axemen defeated the visiting Varsity Reds 4-1. The archrivals are now tied atop the AUS standings but UNB has one game in hand.

Acadia and UNB square off again on Friday, this time in Fredericton, live on AUStv.ca (7 p.m. AST).

In the only other Top-10 confrontation of the coming week, McGill visits UQTR in Trois-Rivières, Que., on Wednesday night. With six contests remaining for each team, the Patriotes hold a slim two-point advantage over the Redmen and Carleton in the OUA East.
